Most cadet pilots focus almost entirely on flying hours and written exam scores. Then they walk into an airline selection panel - and discover that the room is full of pilots with similar qualifications. What separates the selected from the rejected is almost never technical knowledge. It is everything else.
Phase 1: Aptitude Tests. Most airline selections begin with computer-based psychometric and aptitude tests. These include multi-tasking, spatial reasoning, mathematical reasoning, and reaction time. Practice is crucial - there are preparation courses and free online tools that mirror the test formats used by major airlines.
Phase 2: Simulator Assessment. You will be placed in a sim you have never flown before and assessed on aircraft handling, crew resource management, and your ability to follow instructions. The assessors are not looking for perfect stick-and-rudder - they are watching how you think, prioritise, and communicate under pressure.
Phase 3: HR and Technical Interview. You will face both a technical panel and an HR interview. The technical questions range from aircraft systems to DGCA regulations to ATC procedures. The HR interview explores your motivation, resilience, crew interactions, and how you handle conflict.
What airlines actually want: Awareness (situational, operational, crew-based), communication clarity, calm decision-making, and the ability to admit what you do not know. Overconfidence is consistently cited by airline HRs as a red flag in cadet assessments.
Preparation tips: Join mock interview sessions. Study the airline's fleet, routes, and values before the interview. Review crew resource management principles - not just the theory, but how you would apply them to real scenarios.
