The Student Pilot Licence (SPL) is your very first official aviation document in India. Before you can fly solo, before you can log flight hours toward a CPL, you need the SPL. Here is exactly how to get one.
Eligibility requirements:
- Minimum age: 16 years
- Educational qualification: Class 10 pass (with Physics and Mathematics at least at Class 10 level)
- Medical fitness: Valid Class 2 Medical Certificate from a DGCA-approved examiner
Step 1: Obtain your Class 2 Medical Certificate. Visit a DGCA-approved aviation medical examiner. They will conduct vision, hearing, cardiovascular, and general health assessments. This is non-negotiable - you cannot proceed without a valid medical.
Step 2: Apply on DGCA's eGCA portal. India's DGCA now processes all licence applications through the eGCA (electronic General Civil Aviation) portal. Create an account, fill in your personal details, and upload required documents.
Required documents: Passport-sized photographs, Class 10 mark sheet/certificate, Class 2 Medical Certificate, identity proof (Aadhaar/Passport), and address proof.
Step 3: Pay the DGCA fee. SPL application fees are payable through the eGCA portal. Fees are subject to change - check the current schedule on dgca.gov.in.
Step 4: Receive your SPL. Once your application is reviewed and approved, DGCA issues your SPL. It is valid for 5 years from the date of issue.
What the SPL lets you do: With an SPL and under instructor supervision, you can begin dual and solo training flights at a DGCA-approved flying training organisation (FTO). You cannot fly passengers, but you can legally solo.
